Clean-up of untreated waste water discharge: custom work!

Cleaning up untreated waste water discharge is a very complex business. There are no unambiguous national preconditions or starting points for the clean-up approach. The often extremely diverse circumstances, the large number of parties involved and their divergent interests demand a specific integrated, area-oriented approach.

Oranjewoud offers flexible customized solutions and sets itself apart with a process-based approach and a clear director's role during the entire process of preparation, implementation and control.

Clean-up measures

A few years ago legislation was enacted to ensure that households and companies that still discharged their waste water untreated into surface water or into the ground were cleaned up prior to January 1, 2005. Due to the often complex nature of this clean-up, several parties in the Netherlands failed to meet this deadline. Work continues on the implementation of all the required clean-up measures.

Custom work in Rheden

In principle, municipalities have to connect all land parcels to the sewer system. In the municipality of Rheden a portion of the 'untreated dischargers' could be connected to municipal sewer systems during 2004, but for others, this was not possible.

Individual treatment

An Individual treatment of waste water (IBA) needed to be considered for these parcels. Oranjewoud is the first consulting and engineering bureau in the Netherlands certified by KIWA (Water Supply Products and Testing Institute) for the installation of all sorts of IBA systems. Based on a Design & Construct agreement, Oranjewoud performed the design work, as well as plan preparation and then its implementation for the municipality.

A range of expertise and knowledge was required because of the complex, multi-faceted nature of the project. For instance, eighteen house-boats had to be connected to the sewer system. This demands measures that differ greatly from those of standard sewer connections.

Innovative expertise in Breukelen

Since 1996, the municipality of Breukelen has been busy trying to connect the sometimes very remote homes in outlying areas and parts of the Kievitsbuurt to the municipal sewer system. These homes required a special approach; the connection had to take place without damaging the natural environment to any noteworthy degree.

Own technique

Oranjewoud developed its own technique, the so-called WiKrO principle, especially for this sort of situation. This revolutionary and ingenuous system enabled conduits for free waste and compact sewerage, but also other cables and conduits to be placed in the ground without grooves. The fact that there is no need for dismantling work means that this technique is extremely appropriate for installing sewer conduits in house-boats, recreational facilities, homes and companies in (vulnerable) outlying areas.

Successful integrated approach

The final accomplishment of a successful clean-up solution is the result of comprehensive communication, planning and formal steps within the clean-up process. Oranjewoud combines theoretical knowledge, practical experience and innovative solutions. We have experienced great success these past few years in the clean-up of untreated waste water discharge.
