Individual waste water treatment

Untreated waste water from almost 150,000 households and companies still drains into surface water or into the ground. A few years ago legislation stipulated that these untreated discharges were to be cleaned up prior to January 1st, 2005.

In order to stimulate the clean-up process, the Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment introduced an integrated approach under the direction of the municipality. To start with, municipalities were required to connect all land parcels to the sewage system, but sometimes the connection cost is so high that an alternative involving individual treatment of waste water (IBA) needs to be considered.

Certified

Oranjewoud is the first consulting and engineering bureau in the Netherlands certified by KIWA (Water Supply Products and Testing Institute) for the installation of all sorts of IBA systems. This allows the continuous clean-up of untreated waste water discharges. Oranjewoud is distinguished by its process-oriented approach and a clear director's role.

Our approach

The clean-up process is based on a project proposal with work commitments for the preparatory phase, project organization and global planning for preparation. An area clustering is presented based on the type of clean-up measures, the geographic situation, municipal borders and the phasing requested. The starting point for the design is determined accordingly and detail plans elaborated.

Definitive clean-up

A detailed action plan links the approved design to the overview drawings and the clean-up measures to be taken for each discharge. The communication lines involved in the work, the preparation, the implementation and the follow-up steps are also described here. Communication lines with the owners of the parcels where the work is to be done are an important part of the plan.

Finally, our work approach results in a definitive clean-up plan with a quote for each parcel. Specific attention is devoted to the maintenance contract, which provides for technical maintenance and the disposal of the silt. All commitments are documented in a letter of intent. The entire preliminary plan results in the implementation of the IBA installation selected. This is followed by an ongoing plan for management and maintenance.
