Fire controllability: safety concept for large fire compartments
According to the Buildings Decree, fire compartments may not be larger than 1,000 sq. meters. For certain buildings, such as warehouses and production centers, this is not practical. By using the fire prevention concept 'Fire controllability' developed together with Save, equivalent and completely acceptable solutions can be arrived at.
In 'Fire controllability', in contrast to the Buildings Decree, requirements are linked directly to intended use. As a result no standard compartment sizes need to be adhered to. This fire prevention concept gives the user different options in formulating an acceptable permit application.
Advisory report necessary
In order to choose a successful alternative, it is recommended that a construction plan and 'Fire controllability' advisory report be commissioned at an early stage. Generally speaking, a report which addresses the following issues will be sufficient:
- General features and basic data used;
- Description of situation and plan (including the type of construction method, placement on the lot and description of intended use);
- Assessment system for fire controllability:
- Quantity of combustible material and associated requirements and options (such as the size of the fire compartments).
Well-received by fire departments
The 'Fire controllability' report is considered an advisory document for the municipality and fire department assessing the plan. Reports produced by Oranjewoud/SAVE are generally well-received by fire departments. The authorities subsequently specify and monitor requirements.
