Update on fire prevention concept
According to the Buildings Decree, fire compartments may not be larger than 1000 square meters. Moreover, compartments must be able to withstand disruptive discharges or spreading of fire from adjacent compartments for 60 minutes (in some cases 30 minutes). For certain buildings, such as warehouses and production centers, this is not practical. Exceptions must, therefore, be made.
For these exceptions, the engineering bureau Save has prepared a 'Fire prevention concept – fire controllability' at the request of the Ministry for Home Affairs. Using this concept, surface and prevention calculations can be made to determine maximum compartment size.
Assignment Ministry for Home Affairs
Not long ago the engineering bureau Oranjewoud/Save accepted an assignment from the Ministry for Home Affairs to develop an update of the concept together with EFPC BV and V2BO Advies. This is to result in an updated and simplified version of the method of determining the size of fire compartments for 'Fire controllability' and the requirements that are imposed from the perspective of fire controllability.
A trade-off model is being prepared that demonstrates the interrelationship between building legislation and other methods. The final touch is to develop application instructions that support both design and application in practice.
