Course - Identifying asbestos in the soil
At the present time the question of how to handle asbestos in the soil is a pressing one for anyone in the Netherlands who is involved in soil clean-up. A great deal of asbestos was used as hardening material in our country, so it's not surprising that asbestos is being discovered on a regular basis at work sites. This has frequently resulted in work delays and unexpected additional costs.
It is important to (be able to) identify asbestos at the earliest possible stage and to take the required follow-up steps in an adequate fashion. One must also take into account the possibility of having to take additional safety measures, of procedures lasting longer and/or of more costs being incurred.
Purpose
By the end of the course:
- You will be able to identify asbestos;
- You will have learned the health risks associated with asbestos;
- You will have gained an overview of the different legislative and regulatory frameworks in the area of asbestos in soil;
- You will be in a position to apply this knowledge in practice.
Target group
The course is intended for all those involved with soil investigation and clean-up. This might include employees of the municipality (departments of soil, enforcement) as well as contractors or engineering bureau staff members.
Structure
The course is divided into a practical portion and a theoretical portion. In the morning the theoretical background relevant to asbestos is discussed. This means that in the morning such subjects are dealt with as:

The program in the afternoon is geared towards practice. In this portion of the course participants apply the theory that they have learned in the morning. The emphasis is on identifying asbestos and enacting appropriate measures.
