Soil clean-up on British American Tobacco factory terrain

The factory manufactured approximately 1 million cigarettes on a daily basis until 2001. The extensive infrastructure required included a tank park with gas, fuel oil and heavy fuel. Leaking underground tanks generated two polluted areas in awkward locations.

The situation regarding the BAT terrain appeared to be quite special. One zone, polluted by fuel oil, was located completely under a factory building annex and, moreover, two meters from an industrial brick chimney under monument protection. Meanwhile approximately 900 tons of polluted soil needed to be dug up.

The second zone, polluted by fuel oil and gas, from which 1300 tons had to be removed, was situated chiefly under a concrete awning supported by six concrete pillars covered with asbestos sheets. A challenge that Soresma was only too happy to meet.

Effective

In cleaning up the soil near the chimney, stability measures were of the highest priority. For instance, a concrete wall was placed in the ground and, during the excavation process, the movement of the chimney was monitored daily by a surveyor. The polluted soil could be removed effectively and without incident due to this customized approach.

In the second zone the concrete awning with asbestos pillars was first demolished under strict observation of the permit specifications. Subsequently the excavation work proceeded without any noteworthy difficulties. Finally three drains were drilled in the soil at this location to pump up and clean the ground water.
