Soil

The quality of the soil is playing an ever increasing role in land use development. Whatever the type of development, contaminated land issues keep popping up. Oranjewoud has the capabilities to resolve any soil issue you may encounter.

After a number of incidents in the nineteen-eighties it became clear that soil contamination is a major problem in the Netherlands. In response a soil contamination law was drawn. Quickly other European countries followed. From the beginning Oranjewoud was present in these  markets, operating as Oranjewoud or its subsidiary companies Soresma, Sorange or HVMT. Oranjewoud  delivers strategic tailor made advice and works at the edge of innovative remediation technologies.

Soil surveys

Soil surveys can be carried out for a variety of reasons: for land use development, property transfers, mergers and acquisitions, in case of health risk issues, spills or accidents. For all these reasons Oranjewoud can provide the best adapted soil survey, if needed combined with a number of other land-use related surveys, all available within our extensive in house resources.

The Oranjewoud team includes consultants, engineers and (field) technicians with plenty of experience in their home countries in Western Europe, but also in other European countries, the Middle East, Africa and Asia, servicing local enterprises or multinational clients from all over the world.

Strategic soil advice

Due to the increasing importance and impact of contaminated land on public and private development and investment, Oranjewoud has developed different tools to support the process of management decision making. Oranjewoud has undertaken numerous feasibility studies and advised and designed a variety of greenfield as well as brownfield development projects.

Contaminated land issues are often complex, due not only to scientific and technical challenges, but also due to ever changing regulatory conditions, uncertainties in legal liability, public concerns, and desire for continuity in operations. Therefore Oranjewoud implements a holistic approach where risk-based and integrated remedial solutions are the main driving forces for the success of the project focusing on your goal.

Soil remediation

Since the beginning of the soil contamination awareness in Europe, Oranjewoud is at the front line of the development of innovative and problem solving remedial solutions. Oranjewoud has undertaken hundreds of remediation projects, involving innovative as well as proven technologies, large scale industrial as well as local residential projects. The success of a clean-up operation depends on the efficiency and flexibility of the chosen approach to the project. This implies that in many cases single solutions will not suffice and a creative  approach frequently involving multiple remediation methods is necessary.

Oranjewoud has its own remediation R&D subsidiary HMVT, where many of the technical improvements of today found their origin. Every day, Oranjewoud is pushing the technological boundaries one step further to maximise performance and reduce costs. An example of one of our innovations is the use of emulsified soy as a slow release carbon source for enhanced natural attenuation of chlorinated hydrocarbons.

Soil protection

The first step in dealing with soil contamination is to prevent it from happening altogether. Oranjewoud designs and realises soil protection facilities for a wide range of clients from local petrol stations to regional landfills and chemical industry sites. The protective measures can be as simple as plastic secondary containments for drums or as complex as the in-situ construction of different confining and intermediate leachate collecting or controlling layers. Oranjewoud has successfully developed new soil protective applications such as asphalt, concrete and resin-bonded compounds for industrial sewers.
