Safety
Working with hazardous substances on an industrial scale requires special attention to risk management. The authorities, stakeholders and investors require insight in the risks associated with the handling of hazardous substances as well as insight in risk prevention and mitigation measures.
Within Oranjewoud the expertise with respect to safety is clustered in the business group Save. Its knowledge and experience is concentrated in the following specific fields:
- risk analysis and safety studies
- safety management
- organization and capacity planning of fire departments
- fire safety engineering
- emergency preparedness planning
- risk management systems analysis
These skills and know-how are employed in projects for governmental bodies and the private sector. The projects may range from technical or organizatorial to the development of risk management policies. Save’s long track record, dating back to 1983, ensures a broad base of knowledge about developments and current status in our working areas of techniques and methods, of regulatory regimes, and of public perception. Our approach can be quantitative as well as qualitative and is often supported by internationally accepted software tools.

External and industrial safety
One field of work where Save has acquired many years experience is in systematically determining what undesirable events may occur and indicating the resources needed for preventing them from happening, or for restricting the adverse consequences of such an event.
Risk analyses and safety studies are carried out for both governmental and corporate clients: quantitative risk assessments, reliability analysis, effect and damage modelling as well as design oriented safety studies like HAZOP, WHAT-IF etc. The advice given is practice oriented and adjusted to fit the technical, commercial and legal options available. Organizational and cultural aspects have a part to play here alongside the technical ones. In short: resolving safety problems demands an practical and often integrated approach.
Improving emergency response
Save’s expertise in the field of fire fighting and disaster management is broad. We have come across most of the key questions in the mind of a fire chief. From pro-action, prevention, preparation, repression to aftercare. We continuously develop many emergency preparedness plans ranging from a single industrial site, to national response plans.
We have developed the Dutch national standard for modelling the achieved service levels of a fire department given its capacity, surroundings and response time. And we have consulted many public and corporate fire departments about their organizational structure and capacity to optimize their performance.
